Fred Sherwood & Sons Transport began business life as a small farming family in the village of Long Whatton, north Leicestershire in the late 1920’s. Headed by Fred Sherwood and his wife Frances, they worked the farm and sold their produce in the local markets.

By 1940 they had two sons, George and Alan. The family continued to farm through the war and on into the next decade. Around 1950, Fred decided to buy a Bedford 5 ton truck in order to deliver his own produce. A few years later, Fred was approached by a local miller and was asked to under take deliveries on his behalf. This was the beginning of what F Sherwood & Sons Transport evolved into. Fred, George and Alan working together, continued to develop the haulage business into the 1960’s just as the M1 motorway was being built from what is now Junction 18 Crick northwards.

The quarries in this area became the prime source of large amounts of work. In 1963 Fred purchased a piece of land in the village which became the base for the company.

With the death of Fred Sherwood in 1964, George and Alan continued in the family business. George ran the admin side and Alan worked in the garage. By 1973 they had built the fleet up to around 20 vehicles working for local businesses. At Easter 1973, George died, so Alan took the reins and from then on continued to expand his fathers business through hard work and acquisitions into the group of companies that is now known as F Sherwood & Sons Transport Ltd. Fred Sherwood & Sons Transport Ltd, can offer a complete service to those companies that require movements in bulk using tippers, ejectors, walking floors and flat bed/tautliners.

Commodities such as quarry products, scrap metals, grains, solid fuel, ashes, waste and recycling materials, palletised and prepacked goods, can be undertaken with the clients knowing that the company motto of ‘Sherwoods for Service’ applies to whatever commodity is carried.

Today, the company is still a family firm, with Alan Sherwood as the figure-head and the third generation of the Sherwood family directly involved in the business. Together they steer the company forward into the 21st century so that future generations can take their place within the company that Fred Sherwood started back in the 50’s. Taken together, the transport companies have at their disposal some 200 or so vehicles offering a reliable bulk logistical service.
